Again, I did read the first book, but I don't think you need to to understand the family dynamic and basic plot linethis was explained well. The stories in the Dragon Griaule series never appeal that much to me, they are well written like everything from Shepard, but a little bit too long and over the top, the setting of the last story in Temalagua(something like Guatemala) is interesting stuff, at last you have a setting less weird than in the rest of the series, buy it only if you like almost everything from Shepard (and that is my case). The book makes it seem if you've watched the movie you'll know what to expect in the book.
